#BeBoldForChange: Penny Choo From BloomThis Spills The Bean About Being A Wife & Entrepreneur

International Women’s Day may have passed, but at the pslove company, we celebrate women’s achievements everyday (pssttt, all girls team. Almost).
We had a chance to work with this wonderful female entrepreneur, Penny Choo. What we found inspiring about Penny was her effort to grow BloomThis while challenging stereotypes by working alongside her husband, Giden Lim.

Penny is a passionate, resourceful and versatile entrepreneur who looks to create meaningful impact with her products. She wants to live in the world where love is brave, dreams are pursued, and life is fulfilled.

She is the Co-founder and COO of a flower startup known as BloomThis. She wants to create the most unforgettable gifting experience and be the most sought-after floral company in town, and everywhere else. She has the vision to touch 10 million lives by delivering unforgettable experiences with flowers.

When she’s not working up a storm, you can find her re-reading her yellow-stained books, watching an obscene number of movies without a trace of shame, and adding items into the shopping cart of her favourite online apparel store.

What inspired you to start your company and work with your husband?

I started this business with my husband as we wanted to improve the floral gifting experience via technology. It is also a plus point to work with my husband, as we love each other and definitely love what we do. We wanted to spread our passion, love and joy by creating beautiful moments through flower gifting to the world.

Who have been your role models? What about them do you admire?

Oprah Winfrey!

She has endured and survived a tumultuous life, rising to become the most influential and powerful woman on television. She also used her network as a platform to improve the wellbeing of her viewers and strives to have a positive & meaningful effect in the world. Nobody does it better.

Her career touched million lives. She is an inspiration of strength and perseverance, by being the prime example of what it means to live fearlessly and do anything you can dream up.

What do you think makes a successful leader? And in particular women leaders?

I think real leadership is about service.

It’s about lowering ourselves such that the people who work with us and our organisations can thrive in ways that create values.

What do you think are the biggest challenges women face the most in today’s day & age?

Balancing business and family life!

It is very challenging for wives or mothers (especially entrepreneurs) who have to simultaneously run their families and their business.

What and/or who helped you to push forward with your goals, despite the setback(s) you might have faced?

I would say first is my husband, who has constantly been my sound board. He has given me the utmost encouragement and support.

Secondly, it is my family who has always believed in me even though sometimes they are unable to fully understand why I do what I do (chuckles).

If you could tell your younger self one thing you now know, what would it be?

Do not be afraid of what others think of you. Express yourself and make your voice heard, do not be afraid to make mistakes.

What do you think is holding women back?

Commitment to personal or family responsibilities.

What’s your own personal mantra?

Innovation and creativity are the two prominent attributes of every successful entrepreneur. We should be audacious enough to face all fears and allow our creative ideas to translate into success.

Thank you for the interview, Penny! Let’s keep working together towards recognising women’s achievements and supporting female entrepreneurs.
