Matte, shimmer, sheen, gloss, satin, stain. The terminology for makeup can be really confusing, especially for newcomers. But we all have to start somewhere, right? At first, the sheer amount of makeup available can be quite intimidating, I mean, just how many kinds of eyeliner can possible exist? Well, quite a number apparently. So to make things simpler, we’re going to streamline things a bit; here are some beauty must-haves for beginners, that will have all your bases covered!

If you’ve been exposed to any form of social media, I’m sure you’ve encountered the whole brow craze that has been going on this year. But while you don’t need to go all out, and sculpt your brows with perfect precision, the difference a pair of fleek brows can make is undeniable. If you’re wearing minimal makeup, a good pair of brows can still make you look relatively put together. But even if you’re wearing a full face of makeup, with ratchet brows, then the whole look will just look incomplete. We love the Etude House Drawing Eyebrow Pencil, as it provides fuss-free application, that will make it easy for beginners, and veterans alike. Coming in at less than $6, who can complain?

2. MAC Studio Finish Concealer ($30)

Not everyone of us is blessed with Beyoncé-esque skin that is free from pores and blemishes. So to get that kind of effect, us mere mortals will have to cheat a little bit, and that’s where concealer comes in. The trick to achieving that flawless finish is by spot concealing, which means to only use a tiny amount, concentrated on the specific area where your spot is, and gently blend it out. Sometimes people can go a little overboard with the concealer, resulting in an even more unnatural look, without hiding any of the blemishes. So remember, with concealer, less is always more. Though this MAC option is more pricey than some of your drugstore alternatives ($30), we feel that it is still relatively reasonably priced compared to the higher end options, while providing the long-wearing properties and pigmentation that you need. Also, there are plenty of shades for you to choose from, so that you get a shade that suits you perfectly!

3. Sleek MakeUP Sleek Blush ($15)

Don’t underestimate the world of difference blush can make with your complexion. While it may not make sense why you would just put colour on your cheeks after trying so hard to reduce the discolouration, trust me it’s not the same. Blush can help you achieve that “glowing from within” look that is so in trend now, and is especially important if you used any form of foundation before hand. This Sleek offering is highly effective as it is crazily pigmented, and can last really long even in Singapore’s humid weather. It’s pigmentation means that you only need a tiiiny bit when applying, allowing the blush to last forever basically. But be warned though, we are not joking about the pigmentation, so use a really light hand when applying this! You can get this blush here!

4. Clio Waterproof Brush Eyeliner ($25.90)

We all know how much difference eyeliner can make, so this list would definitely not be complete without one. For makeup newcomers, using liquid eyeliners can seem daunting, and the possibility of screwing up is so real. But liquid eyeliners are just so much more precise and long-lasting than normal pencil eyeliners! You don’t need to spend half the day worrying about whether you have panda eyes with liquid eyeliners, as waterproof ones basically don’t budge. If you want to get over the fear of messing up, try applying your eyeliner before putting on the rest of your makeup, this will minimise the amount of makeup you will have to clean up if you do screw up application. This Clio Eyeliner is perfect for beginners as it is long-lasting, and relatively easy to control. Its brush tip is malleable, but not to the extent that it becomes flimsy, making it easy to apply!

5. NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream ($12)

There’s just something about putting on a good lippie that makes you feel like a million bucks, and needless to say, lip products are usually the entry way into the world of makeup for most of us. There are tons of products out there, with varying textures, and shades. But one lip trend has overshadowed all others: the Kyle Jenner lip. Her luscious, taupe, albeit artificially enhanced lips took the world by storm, inspiring a flurry of tutorials and lip ranges. But to get her lips on a budget, the NYX option is going to be your best bet. With plenty of nude or taupe shades for you to choose from, you can now achieve her pillow-y lip effect without breaking bank! These lip creams also have a smooth and moisturising formula that makes application seamless, even if you have dry lips.

So there you have it, folks! We hope this list helped you streamline your options, and give you a way to manoeuvre through the sometimes complicated world of beauty.
